Background and History
Blacks In Government - Greater Boston Chapter

In the spring 1989, the Regional Manager of the General Accounting Office (GAO) summoned four Black employees into his office and urged them to start a new local chapter of Blacks In Government in Boston. The group began to recruit members and by early June approximately ten employees had agreed to form a new interest group named the "Greater Boston Chapter.” On August 19, 1989 the Greater Boston Chapter (of Blacks In Government) received its official Charter. Today, membership consists of a diversified group of government workers - local, state, and federal.

Blacks In Government - Region I Council

The Region I Council consists of chapters within the New England geographic area, namely Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Currently there are three active chapters and one interest group: Greater Boston, Middlesex, and Rhode Island chapters, and Amistad, Connecticut. The first council chapter was established in 1982 by a group of federal employees based at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, Massachusetts.
National Blacks In Government, Washington DC

The National Blacks In Government (BIG) was organized in 1975 and incorporated as a non-profit under the District of Columbia jurisdiction in 1976. Since inception, BIG has been a national response to the needs of African Americans in public service to organize around items of mutual concern while using their collective strength to confront workplace and community issues. BIG recognized that federal, state, county and municipal Black employees faced the same general types of problems that could be addressed through collective and collaborative efforts.
